Tunis/Tunisia — Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi, on Thursday, headed to Djerba on the occasion of the annual pilgrimage to El Ghriba Synagogue, accompanied by the ministers of religious affairs and tourism.
No festivities have been scheduled at this event due to the COVID19. The decision was taken by the scientific committee to stem the spread of the virus.
The pilgrimage takes place this year at the same time as the month of Ramadan, an invitation to coexistence between religions, said the Prime Minister.
He added that the holding of the annual pilgrimage to El Ghriba despite a delicate health situation is part of the preservation of traditions and rituals of “multicultural» Tunisia.
“Tunisia is known for living together and for peace and I think it is the ideal place where all communities live together in peace,” he pointed out.
Rene Trabelsi, former Minister of Tourism and member of the organising committee of the pilgrimage said the number of foreign visitors does not exceed 50 people this year, because of the health protocol.
